History came alive when a huge sign displaying old photographs was officially unveiled inside an iconic resting spot in March town centre.
The sign was funded by a group of history fans who linked up on Facebook.
Sue Edgoose said: “Over the last 18 months the history group has been raising money by producing books of photographs of old March.
“We were approached by Fenland District Council’s Street Pride team and asked if we should put some up on the back wall of the old man’s shelter to preserve a piece of history for years to come.”
The shelter, which used to have windows and doors when it was first built after the second world war, was a popular spot for the men to sit, many of them while they waited for the pubs to open, she said.
“Now the windows and doors have gone but it is still a popular spot to sit. The sign is big enough so everybody can see the old photos.”
Costing around £475 the sign was put in place by 3B Design in a joint project involving the March Cambridgeshire History group, March in Bloom, Fenland District Council and Street Pride.
Sue Beer, of the March History Facebook group, said: “If anybody has any old photos they would like to share then please join the Facebook group or drop into the Acre Attic where we can scan them and then return them promptly.”
