Essential work to upgrade gas pipes in March town centre is moving ahead of schedule, according to Fenland District Council.
Cadent, which manages the local gas network, started on the first phase of the works in Dartford Road, Darthill Road and Robingoodfellow’s Lane on February 13.
They were due to move on to the second phase in Broad Street from mid-March, but works have progressed well, putting them two weeks ahead of schedule.
The southbound carriageway of Broad Street will now be closed to traffic from the first week of March, when the northbound carriageway will become two-way to ensure traffic can still use Broad Street in both directions.
The works are to allow the gas main on Broad Street and Dartford Road to be moved.
The aging underground pipes are also being replaced to help create a ‘greener’ gas future and keep energy flowing safely in the town for decades to come.
Some gas supplies to the local area may be disrupted. Those most likely to be affected have been informed by Cadent.
The gas works are part of the wider regeneration of March town centre, with a combination of improvement projects underway by many partners.
