People who live near HMP Whitemoor in March were left disturbed last night (Wednesday May 28) after they could hear a "piercing" alarm coming from the prison.

The alarm could be heard from 11pm until around midnight, with some residents likening it to an air raid siren.

Despite concerns that it could have been an escaped prisoner alarm, the Ministry of Justice has confirmed that no escape has occurred at HMP Whitemoor.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice said: "They (HMP Whitemoor) have speculated the alarm heard could be linked to a small sewage plant outside the front of the prison which sometimes blocks or backs up and sounds rather loudly and flashes a red light."

The alarm could be heard from as far out as Murrow and other surrounding villages.

It was last heard at midnight, and has remained off since then.
