A sports mad schoolboy from Wimblington has smashed his very own fitness challenge, raising £1,200 for Royal Papworth Charity.

Austin Moor, 10, took on a 10km cycle ride, 10km run and 10km swim during June, to help raise money for the charity, that supports the ground-breaking work of Royal Papworth Hospital.

Austin said: “The run was the hardest part of the challenge. My dad Dayne ran with me, and we got a lost in a field and ended up running 12km instead. I was exhausted.”

Austin’s fundraising is his way of saying a huge thank you for the life-saving treatment his 60-year-old grandad Paul Harlock of Doddington has received from the hospital over the past eight years.

Paul, who has recently been fitted with a pacemaker, a device that sends electrical pulses to your heart to keep it beating regularly, said: “I am so proud of him because he wanted to fundraise for the hospital that without a doubt gives me the best care ever.

"The care I’ve received has not only made my life easier, its also saved my life.”

Austin’s mum Naomi Moore said her son dreamt up the challenge whilst playing on his Xbox in his bedroom.

She said: “We are just super thankful that the surgeons, doctors, nurses and everyone in between, have helped to give Austin, his sister and all his cousins more valuable time with grandad.”

Daniel Saxton, Head of Business Services at Royal Papworth Hospital said, “Wow, hats off to Austin for getting on his bike, running and swimming to raise money for the hospital.

"His stamina and the generosity of his supporters will help us continue to provide the highest standards of care, whilst driving forward new ways of treating heart and lung disease.”
