More than £2,500 has been raised to support a Wisbech mum who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Lauren Thomas set up a GoFundMe campaign to support her mother, Karen, who has been diagnosed with small cell cancer of the stomach.

What started off as shoulder pain resulted in Karen being rushed to hospital for a CT scan, which revealed a number of masses in numerous parts of the body.

After initially being referred to a surgeon, who said there was no way of operating, she was then referred to an oncologist last Wednesday.

"The oncologist gave us the sad news that it was too far gone to cure the cancer and, without chemo, she would only have weeks to live," said Lauren.

Karen started chemotherapy on October 11, but this sudden health crisis has forced her to quit her job as a driving instructor, placing significant financial strain on the family.

"Mum has gone from working full-time as a driving instructor to having to quit her job and stay home due to risk of infection and the pain she is in," Lauren said.

"This has obviously been a huge shock and a massive financial strain," Lauren added.

The campaign aimed to raise £1,500 to help alleviate some of this burden and allow Karen to create lasting memories with her family during her remaining time.

"All of the family are helping and contributing as much as possible but we thought mum deserves to live the rest of her life without the stress and strain," Lauren added.

"We believe she deserves to have the chance to make some memories and enjoy, to the fullest, the time she has left with us."
