A hedgehog rescue charity in the Fens is in “urgent” need of a bigger location amid a record-breaking year.
Heather’s Hedgehog Hostel, which is based in Chatteris, is looking for a place to house the hedgehogs it rescues.
“Ideally it would be in Chatteris and indoors, like unused sheds or garages,” said the charity.
“Anything that has access to electric and water (which we are happy to pay for) and we would even consider land.”
The charity added that it would consider anything, though a long-term location would be ideal.
“Every year countless hedgehogs are injured, orphaned or endangered,” added the spokesperson.
“By providing us with space, you are helping us rescue and rehabilitate vulnerable creatures so we can prepare them for release back into the wild.
“We have had a record amount admitted this year already and we are bursting.”
Christine Colbert, who also lives in the town, said: “We need to do something to hemp Heather and her tiny prickly friends.
“Heather is operating the only hedgehog rescue in the Chatteris / Ely area.
“I know this as a neighbour pointed out a tiny hedgehog to me a few days ago.
“I looked for help and then took the tiny tick-infested hedgie to Heather.
“She’s clearly doing very valuable work towards restoring our falling hedgehog population.
“She definitely needs assistance with premises as the hedgehog hotel is crammed into a tiny room at the rear of her home, where she’s doing her best to care for about 40 little chaps at the moment.”
