Many women in Cambridgeshire do not feel safe walking alone after dark, particularly in our market towns.
A recent Facebook post asked residents how safe they felt on the streets as females.
The responses highlighted a stark contrast between experiences in different towns.
Amy Hollinshead feels secure in Chatteris, saying, "I feel very safe in Chatteris.
"Proud of our lovely town, even after dark."
However, many others voiced concerns about safety in Wisbech.
Susan Newman reflected on the town's past, stating, "Yet Wisbech was a beautiful Georgian town when I worked there in the 60’s.
"How sad."
Hazel Dawn Saunders simply replied, "In Wisbech not at all."
Val Allan Crowden added, "I don’t that’s why I moved."
Tracey Rayner noted a change, saying, "Don't feel safe after dark.
"Not anymore."
Emily Davies echoed this sentiment, stating, "I won’t walk around Wisbech on my own."
Christina Montgomery said: "Well I definitely would not walk through Wisbech of a night or any town come to that."
Many other comments highlighted a general sense of unease.
Valery Condrit remarked, "Not safe at all won't go out in the dark no police about it's dangerous here now."
There were also comments questioning the focus on female safety.
Scott Walton asked, "Why only female so sexist," while Shane Roberts remarked, "Why is it just female a bit sexist don't you think.
Males get attacked as well."
Responses varied widely across the region, with some women feeling safe and others expressing fears about walking alone, particularly at night.
