Firefrighters have pleaded with drivers in Cambridgeshire after poor parking blocked a fire engine attending an emergency call.

A crew from Wisbech was sent to an incident but got stuck as a result of 'poor parking' around The Crescent area on Tuesday (November 19).

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Please remember to think about how you're parking as you could delay our fire engines from getting to an incident.

"A crew was called out in Wisbech yesterday but got stuck on route due to poor parking around The Crescent area.

"They were delayed and had to try to find the driver of the vehicle as they were really struggling to get past."

They added: "These types of delays could have serious consequences for fire crews and those involved in incidents they're attending, so please think before you park."

This isn't the first time Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service has been forced to remind the public of the dangers of poor parking in Wisbech.

Speaking in 2021, Wisbech crew commandy Ady Strowger said parking inconsiderately caused obstructions and frustrations to other road users.

He said: “But it can also make it difficult for all emergency services to access certain areas when responding to 999 calls,” he said.

“Inconsiderate parking, leading to problems with access for our fire engines, is an issue in a number of roads in Wisbech”.

Mr Strowger said that some areas around the Fenland town are notorious for poor parking and there have been occassions where fire engines haven't been able to pass at all.

He added: “This of course can cause a significant delay in responding to emergencies where someone's life could be at risk and every second counts.

“This is a growing problem due in part to increasing car ownership, reduced or unused resident parking areas, traffic calming schemes and thoughtless parking by some motorists.”
