The annual raising of the White Ribbon flag outside New Shire Hall in Alconbury Weald took place on Monday, November 25.

The flag, which shows support for victims of domestic abuse, was raised by Cambridgeshire County Council's chair, Councillor Sebastian Kindersley and Deputy Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Caroline Bewes.

White Ribbon is a UK charity which aims to end male violence against women and girls; Cambridgeshire County Council has received White Ribbon Accreditation for the work it does around addressing male violence.

Before raising the flag, Cllr Kindersley said: “White Ribbon Day is more than just a campaign – it’s a movement that calls on men and boys to be active allies in standing against and preventing violence.

"Gender-based violence impacts everyone, and it’s crucial that men take responsibility for challenging the attitudes and behaviours that perpetuate it.” 

“Cambridgeshire has a proud history of championing equality, and today, we re-affirm our dedication and commitment to making our county a place where everyone can live free from fear and harm.”

Stephen Moir, chief executive, Cambridgeshire County Council, said: ‘I am very proud Cambridgeshire County Council is White Ribbon accredited and we have individuals who have stepped forward as champions and ambassadors who want to help and lead our work in this space.

There is a huge opportunity for more men to step forward and become ambassadors by signing up to the White Ribbon standard to call out these behaviours and help stamp out violence towards women and girls.’
