This week in the Wisbech Standard's Club of the Week feature, we take a look at the Wisbech Squash Club.

James Rust spoke to the Wisbech Standard about the club, which has been running for more than 50 years in the town.

Can you tell us about your club?

"We are Wisbech Squash Club, a volunteer run not-for-profit sports club dedicated to squash.

"We have three heated LED courts (two recently refurbished), where we offer the possibility to play squash and squash57 (formerly known as racquetball).

"We run weekly club nights and internal box leagues with our 65 members. The club is open 24/7 and is accessibly by key fob which is issued with membership."

What is the age range for members of the club?

"Currently they range between 18-70, but we are exploring options to offer junior sessions."

How long has the club been running?

"We've been running in Wisbech since 1969."

Where are you based and where do you meet? How often do you meet?

"We are based in Wisbech on Harecroft Road. We meet up for club nights on Tuesday for Squash and Thursday for Racquetball."

Is there a membership cost for the club?

"Our 2024-2025 membership prices are below:

  • £40 for an individual membership
  • £55 for a family membership
  • £10 for a junior membership

Do you have any special equipment you use? Do you fundraise for it?

"To play the sports, you require rackets, balls and non-marking trainers. We have a couple of spare rackets and balls for use if people don't have them.

"These have been offered up by existing members, which means we don't have to fundraise."

Is there outdoor and indoor training? Does it depend on the season?

"It's indoor only - we get to put our heating on in the winter."

Do you have volunteers who help train at the club?

"We have a committee made up of 6 members on a voluntary basis. We currently don't have any coaches at the club."

What sort of competitions/matches do you do?

"We don't currently offer any competitions or matches, but we have internal leagues for members to compete in if they wish."

Can new members join at any time of the year?

"Yes, absolutely! We accept new members at any time."

Why do you think people enjoy coming to your club?

"We are a friendly and welcoming club where everyone can come to play the game, regardless of age or ability.

"The committee are dedicated to driving the club forwards and are always looking for ways to improve the facilities we have on offer. We have good communication with members via WhatsApp where they can request games or ask any questions."
